How To Wear The Ugly Sneaker Trend
Emerging in 2018 and still going strong, the ugly sneaker trend is finally growing on us, so we wanted to delve into it more, and see how we can make these chunky styles work for us— and you.
First Thing's First
Who are the major players in the game? Balenciaga's Triple S sneakers are the sneakers that started what is now known as the "ugly dad sneakers" trend. These "ugly shoes" retail for roughly $900 and are proving to be both high-fashion and street style at the same time. They are bulbous, come in a range of different colorways, and we find ourselves oddly wanting more than just 1 pair.
Adidas, Ganni, Nike, and Reebok are all strong competitors to the Triple S sneaker, yet they boast much lower price points than Balenciaga's dad sneakers.
If you have your heart set on purchasing a designer dad shoe, then Gucci, Prada, Stella McCartney, and Vetements are all super high-fashion brands (found on ShopItToMe.com) that are putting out their own variations of the Triple S sneaker. These are definitely all worth checking out.
Let's get into the styling aspect of ugly sneakers, shall we?
With A Dress And A Mini Bag
Initially chunky sneakers and a dress sound like a vile combination, however, this is how many high-end fashion stylists are dressing their celebrity clients AND we are into it!
We prefer to wear a sleek slip dress with our ugly shoes, and then we are going to top off the look with a mini bag.
For this look, we are feeling bronzy, so we'd use a Jergens self tanning lotion to achieve the most natural look possible. Add a little bronzer, a super wet pink lip gloss and maybe one swipe of black mascara. (We love the fresh faced look!) Finish off with a super sleek pulled back pony.
Cropped Leggings And An Oversized T-Shirt
This could be more of an LA style over a New York look, but one of our stylists is from NYC and she says it's totally wearable ANY place right now. High-fashion today is having a casual moment, and what was normally considered a fashion faux-pas, is now a Fashion Week approved look.
With the chunky sneaker trend, you can take the look as far (like the leopard mini), or as toned down (like this casual look), as you want to.
Skinny Jeans And A Strapless Shirt
We love ourselves a great pair of denim, and right now we are imagining our ugly shoe trend paired against skinny white denim and a tube top. If this sounds a little 90's to you, then you're thinking in the right direction.
You'll notice that Reebok has a collab with high-fashion designer Vetements. Because this dad shoe collaboration with Vetements is pricey, we've also included the above Reebok sneaker, which is more attainable.
Speaking of attainable prices, download the free Shop It To Me app so that you can price stalk this Vetements sneaker, as well as any other item you see here, to get a sale alert straight to your inbox once said item goes down in price. With A Maxi Dress And A Crossbody
Again, kind of unpredictable, but that's why we're into it, pair your ugly sneakers with a maxi dress and a tiny crossbody handbag.
We love how we kept the tones of the dress and sneaker the same, and then added that pop of color with the baby blue handbag.
Ugly— but make it FASHION
In our own opinion, if you purchase a pair of Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers, then you can really rock them however you want. In this rare case, if the "sneaker is wearing you" it's OK. In other circumstances, you'd prefer to be "wearing the sneaker".
Regardless if your chunky sneakers are designer or not, you can always make them work in your favor with our personal styling suggestions mentioned above.
